Serial Number Restoration

Intervention Techniques^
It is well known that the identity of certain objects, such as vehicles, firearms and others, is determined by numbers or other identifying marks impressed on their surface.
Possible intervention on these numbers, such as obliteration or abrasion, alteration, fabrication of a false number, insertion or embedding of a number, and metal implantation, can be detected through internationally recognized, scientifically documented and judicially accepted scientific and technical methods, materials, devices and instruments.

Laboratory Examinations ^
The examinations performed concern the authenticity check, decoding and restoration of the identification data of the examined objects. In particular, when doubts arise during the authenticity check, we perform:

  1. On vehicles:
    • Restoration of the erased or altered digitsthat compose the serial numbers, namely chassis number, engine number, factory plates, etc. &
    • Decoding of datathat compose the identity of the vehicle, either through special procedures or by using appropriate software where this is feasible, for example in cases of vehicle purchase or doubts about authenticity.
  2. Onfirearms, restoration of the erased or altered identification data, namely manufacturing factory, country of origin, serial number, as well as other markings and symbols carried on them &

  3. On variousmachines, devices, components, etc.,restoration, mainly from any metallic surface, of erased or altered identification data.

The results of all the above laboratory examinations are documented through photography and by using comparative data.

Evaluation - Utilization ^
In addition, we perform:

  1. Evaluation of Laboratory Examination Reports of State and other Laboratories, in cases related to the restoration of identification data of various objects, such as vehicles, firearms, machinery, etc.
  2. Utilization of datathat require further examination, by pointing out forensic points for additional analysis, documentation and presentation, as well as by identifying points which could be subjected to laboratory examination or exploitation but for which no corresponding request was made.

Indicative questions that may be raised, depending on the case under examination^

  1. Is the impressed chassis or engine serial number of the vehicle genuine and factory-made?
  2. Is there any inconsistency between the impressed number and the characteristics of the vehicle?
  3. Is there embedding, that is, replacement of a part of the vehicle on which the number is impressed?
  4. Are the impressed digits of the serial number under examination consistent with the corresponding factory typeface and style of impression?
  5. Does the vehicle, firearm, machine, etc. intended for resale or purchase bear signs indicative of intervention and falsification of its factory markings?
